Whereas death has taken from
us one of the giants of the Sons of Union
Veterans of the Civil War in the passing
of PCinC Richard C. Schlenker and,
Whereas Brother Schlenker
served the Order well on all levels as
shown by his having served as Commander
of Lincoln-Cushing Camp, as Commander of
the Department of Maryland, and as
Commander in Chief of the National Order
and,
Whereas all brothers within
the boundaries of the Department of
Maryland owe a great debt to Brother
Schlenker for his unfailing service and
dedication to the preservation of the
memory of the men of the Grand Army of
the Republic and our Order,
Now therefore, I as
Commander of the Maryland Department Sons
of Union Veterans of the Civil War do
hereby order all camps within the
Department to drape their charters in
black for a period of 30 days from the
date of this order, furthermore pursuant
to the C&R, Chap. V, Art. III, Sec.
9, all Brothers are respectfully directed
to attach a black mourning ribbon to
their membership badge for a period of
thirty days (30).
Our deepest sympathies are
extended to Brother Schlenker's family.
This order and the enclosed
text from the lifetime achievement award
presented to Brother Schlenker at our
last Department Encampment are to be read
at the next meeting of each Camp in the
Department.
Any camp wishing to honor
the memory of Brother Schlenker is
encouraged to follow the wishes of the
family by making a donation to the GAR
Civil War Museum 4278 Griscom St.
Philadelphia, PA 19124. The Department
will be making such a donation as the
members of the Department Council and
elected Officers agree upon. Condolences
for the family may be mailed to
