Brothers of the Department of Maryland, I regret to inform you of the passing one of our Past Camp Commanders. Brother Louis Smith, 77, organizer and charter camp commander of the George G. Meade Camp #5, Department of Maryland, passed away October 15, following a stroke.

Brother Lou Smith was the driving force to create the Meade Camp and was an active member of the camp until his passing. A native of Grafton, WV, he was a graduate of West Virginia University, served in the Army during the Korean War and worked at the National Security Agency for 35 years. Besides his membership in the SUVCW, he was a 60-year member of the Knights of Columbus and volunteered in the police service program for the Anne Arundel County police and theMaryland State Police. His interests included metal detecting, genealogy, stamp collecting, drama, music, traveling, gardening and crafts.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helga Smith; one daughter, Jeanette Rietschel of Munich, Germany; two sons, SUVCW Brother Gregory Smith Sr. and SUVCW Brother Jeffrey Smith, both of Gambrills; and six grandchildren.

Charters be draped in black for a period of thirty days. Please keep Brother Smith’s family and his camp in your prayers.
