Series of 2007-2008
Department Order No. 1
Headquarters Department of
Maryland, April 23, 2007
-
Having been elected
Department Commander by the delegates present at the 120 th
annual
encampment of the Department of Maryland, SUVCW, held in
Chantilly, Virginia, April 21, 2007, the headquarters for
the department is hereby established at 1715 Mayfair Place,
Crofton, MD 21114.
My thanks are extended to the
members of the Department of Maryland for the trust they
have placed in me by electing me the commander. I will
earnestly endeavor at all times to live up to that trust.
I further extend my thanks to
Brothers James Hanby, PDC, and Eugene Mortorff for
organizing a successful encampment.
Pursuant to the announcement
at the encampment, I hereby publish the following
appointments of officers for the Department of Maryland for
the coming year. Contact information for these officers is
available on the department web page.
Counselor: Andrew M. Johnson, PcinC, PDC
Chaplain: Charles “Chuck” Odell, PCC
Patriotic Instructor: Eugene Mortorff
Graves Registration Officer: Steve Hammond, DC
Monuments Registration Officer: Robert Moore
Eagle Scout Coordinator: A. Kendall Chew, PDC
Signals Officer: John Moscoe
Historian: James R. Hanby, Sr., PDC
I announce and publish the
following additional appointment for the coming year.
Assistant Secretary/Treasurer: A. Kendall Chew, PDC
The following committees were
created at the encampment and I name the following brothers
to these committees:
Archives Committee: Steve Hammond, DC, John Moscoe, Donald
Cumberland, Robert Pollack
Newsletter Committee: John Moscoe, Robert Moore, Steve
Hammond, DC
National Encampment Investigation Committee: Honorary
Co-Chairmen - Andrew M. Johnson,
PCinC and Lowell V. Hammer, PCinC; James B. Hanby, Sr. PDC,
chairman; the remainder of
the committee to be filled by the chairman
I request that all camps
include me, the SVC, JVC and Secretary/Treasurer on all
mailing lists, whether traditional or electronic. I look
forward to attending meetings and special events at as many
camps as possible, and this is the most expedient means of
determining these activities. If I cannot attend a
special event or meeting, I will request another department
officer to attend
in my stead and I encourage all department officers and our
brothers to visit the camps in the department to extend our
fellowship and to exchange ideas. Shortly, I will be
creating my own email list of camp commanders so that I can
contact the camps as easily as possible.
I would like to create a
department calendar on the web site, so that brothers have a
central location to check to determine if they can attend an
event or have a potential conflict. Please forward all dates
of events to me for inclusion in the calendar.
The 121 st
Department Encampment will be held on April 5, 2008 in the
Lansdowne section of Baltimore. The Quality Inn will be the
primary location for the meeting, but some part of the
meeting will be held at nearby Hull Memorial Church, the
only church in the United States dedicated to the GAR.
My goal for the coming year
is to continue the fine work of my predecessors to increase
membership, establish new camps and improve communications
within the department. I remind all of the point I made in
my remarks: Do something extra to honor our brothers of 1861
to 1865.
Yours in fraternity, charity and
loyalty,
Steve Hammond
Department Commander
